I’m John, a qualified heating engineer with over 15 years experience in heating installations, and the person behind Heat Source Hub.
Based in Cheshire in the North West, I install heat pumps and heating systems in new builds and existing homes across England and Wales, and everything on this site comes from that hands-on experience: what works, what goes wrong, and what I’d tell a friend before they spend their money.
My credentials
With many years in the heating and plumbing business and involvement in hundreds of biomass boiler and heat pump installations, I know the pitfalls that the different heat sources and scope of installations can bring, and along with that vast experience, I bring the qualifications, including:
- NVQ Diploma in Domestic Plumbing and Heating (City & Guilds)
- LCL Awards Level 3 in Installation and Maintenance of Heat Pumps
- LCL Awards Core Unit in Heat Pump Technology
- LCL Awards in Water Regulations and Hot Water Systems & Safety (G3 Unvented HWS)
- Manufacturers’ heat pump training courses, including:
- Vaillant aroTHERM Plus
- Worcester Bosch Compress 5800i
- Ideal Logic Air
- Stiebel Eltron HPA-0 Series
- Mitsubishi Ecodan R290 (PUZ-WZ50VAA) and Ecodan R32
- Samsung Gen6 ASHP
- Heliotherm Premium Heat Pumps (inc. GSHP)
I have my own installation business and also work as a subcontract installer for MCS-certified heat pump companies. Those companies hold the MCS certification and handle the grant paperwork on each job; my part is the design detail and the hands-on installation.
My mission
At Heat Source Hub, I’ve made it my goal to empower you with the knowledge and tools necessary to take control of your home’s heating system. My focus is on simplifying complex information, making it accessible and practical. It’s all about helping you make informed decisions that fit your lifestyle and budget, without any of the usual jargon or sales pressure.
Keeping you informed
Now, you might be wondering why you should trust my advice. Well, I bring over 25 years of hands-on experience to the table, having been part of hundreds of heating installations in both new builds and retrofit scenarios. This extensive background allows me to share real-world insights and effective strategies that make a difference to your heating and hot water upgrades.
Helping you make the right decisions
I keep the information here accurate and up to date, so you can stay well informed about the move towards cleaner energy, lower bills and warmer homes. The illustrations and diagrams are there to make it simpler to decide which products and services suit your needs best.
Mastering heating solutions
Heat pumps are at the centre of the move to low-carbon heating. They can transform how efficiently a home is heated, but knowing when and how to fit one is crucial. I will guide you through everything from assessing suitability to understanding the grants available, which can make them far more affordable and, for some eligible households, free.
Biomass pellet boilers. You will see how these can cut running costs compared with oil or LPG while reducing your carbon footprint. From system design to discussing the ideal type of biomass boiler for your needs, the guides are here to ensure every aspect is clear.
Energy-efficient emitters. Find all the latest on modern and traditional-style radiators with smart thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs). I offer all the info you need about underfloor heating as well as smart electric radiators for those difficult-to-heat rooms. There are many ways to keep a home warm and hot water flowing.
Smart heating controls. These are the subtle powerhouses of modern heating, offering technology that can make your life more comfortable and your system more efficient. Smart thermostats, multi-zone controls and smart radiator valves all help keep energy bills lower by only heating the rooms that need it.
Hot water cylinders are pivotal in ensuring your system runs smoothly. Vented or unvented, choosing the right type and size to integrate with your heating system can save you a lot of headaches and money. If you still have an old cylinder in an airing cupboard, then you might be ready to upgrade.
Instant hot water taps can be a handy upgrade that adds to the look of a modern kitchen. I will guide you through the many products available.
Upgrades for your heating
Knowing the pitfalls
From years in the field, I have learned that every home and every family has different heating and hot water needs, and it’s a good feeling when ideas are turned into reality once they have the right information and support. It can be very costly to have a system installed that does not fit your needs.
Correct planning
For those contemplating an upgrade, it’s not just about the tech; it’s about understanding the practical benefits, like reduced energy bills and a smaller environmental footprint. I will convey these benefits in a way that’s honest and straightforward, helping you see the long-term value in your investment.
Making it a reality
From common issues, like outdated plumbing and inadequate insulation, to ensuring your heating systems are future-ready, I am here to help you tackle challenges with confidence. I’m committed to making your heating upgrade a positive experience at every step, both financially and emotionally.
Building trust beyond heating
My commitment
Everything I do is grounded in a personal commitment to sustainability and innovation. It’s about building a more energy-efficient future, not just for us but for generations to come. But what matters most is answering your questions honestly and pointing you in the right direction for a successful upgrade.

In every interaction, my goal is to be more than just a source of information. I want to be someone you feel confident about getting the right advice and choosing the right heating system for your home, and it helps to have someone you can trust guiding you through the process.
