Most homeowners in England and Wales are eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant to help cover the cost of installing a heat pump. The installer will apply on your behalf on the Ofgem website. If you’re in Scotland, find out more about financial help for your heat pump from Home Energy Scotland. If you’re in Northern Ireland, you might be able to get financial help through the Northern Ireland Sustainable Energy Programme.
Note: A current Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) is no longer strictly required for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) grant. Following scheme updates, if your property does not have a valid EPC, your installer can use alternative evidence like a recent utility bill and/or photographs of your existing heating system to prove eligibility. If you do have a valid EPC that is less than 10 years old, it can still be used to apply. However, there is no minimum rating requirement, meaning even the lowest rated homes are eligible, and there are no requirements to fulfill loft or cavity insulation recommendations to get the grant. For custom self-build properties that do not have an EPC, you are still eligible and will not need to provide one”
Note: The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is planned to end in December 2027 but that can be changed by the relevant policy makers. And there’s a very significant update from the latest information: ECO4 has now closed and ECO5 has been scrapped entirely. The replacement is the Warm Homes Plan, which launches January 2027.
